I’ve always been a fan of Toho films from the 1950-60’s no matter how “cheesy” they were. The films followed a standard formula with bad guys from space attacking the Earth in general and Japan in particular. In each film the uninvited space folk always had a “hook” and in the epic, THE MYSTERIANS, the “Moguera” was it. ("Moguera" means "mole" in Japanese).
An atomic powered robot of great power, it was able to bore through the underground and pop up anywhere. Of course the Japanese Defense Force took a beating from the death rays of the robot, even sharp looking Saber Jets couldn’t stop it. But in the end, the Moguera (and the rest of the Mysterian crew) was defeated by neat-looking special effects dispensed by atomic powered ray gun cannons.
The Moguera is a action figure offered by Revoltech. I had to have one and it sat on my computer shelf for a few months. Looking at it one day, I decided it would look better in a diorama scene from the movie. I airbrushed the figure with a silver mist to tone down the factory paint. I added some MVP red lenses for the robots eyes. The diorama base is insulation foam and the rest of the scenery is Woodland Scenics. The armor is from Micronaut and the structures and bridge are scratchbuilt.
All in all it was a fun build and conjured up memories of lots of movie matinees made in Japan!
The Moguera is six inches high and the entire diorama is 12" X 12". The tanks and soldiers are from GHQ Micro Armour and that puts the scale at 1/285.
